Reform TTC and build Subway Connection to the Airport.

“With an efficient connection to Pearson, we do not need the Island Airport.”

Our Transit system had its peak in the sixties and has been on a downward slide ever since. We need to update the fleet and have a better management at the helm. In terms of immediate subway lines required, it is in our commitment to the environment to reduce the number of car and taxi rides to the airport. People need a reliable subterranean (free of traffic) connection to the airport. The Eglinton street car transit route is to be made into subway and connect to the Airport.

Reliable and fast connection is required in order to convince people of the viability of the alternative. I do not support projects such as the Spadina or the St. Clair LRT routes. This kind of infrastructure works much better in a suburban condition such as it is being contemplated for Sheppard East and so on. In a vibrant downtown situation, only subterranean systems should be allowed. Both Spadina and St. Clair should have been subways. These streets could have become one of the most beautiful and vibrant streets like the Champs Elysees of Paris. The space that streetcars take now could have been given to sidewalks and CO2 Free paths of travel, while the subway below could have travelled freely, unimpeded by the street traffic. Alas, that money has already been spent much to the chagrin of the residents and business owners of these areas. However, we should not repeat these mistakes. We should build Eglinton as a subway system and allow it to move people quickly to the airport. See attached sketch and how natural that connection is. Many people use the airport for short trips and have very little luggage, however, they must either use a cab or a bus. Both of these modes of transport burn fossil fuel and are unreliable when it comes to traffic. The subway can almost guarantee the schedule and burns much cleaner. Most of the developed world has already built their rail connection to the airport. Toronto may soon get one with the Georgetown South Expansion, however, the Eglinton connection is needed and Mayor Miller has gone a long way in getting that started. But that plan needs to change a bit to make the entire journey under ground.
